Let’s Talk Science Workshop – RSVPs Due
June 29, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
In this year’s summer program, there is an opportunity for homestay families to take part in an excursion to Toronto and spend some fun and educational time together with their students.
What: Tour of the University of Toronto’s St. George campus in the morning, and a biotechnology workshop at the Mississauga campus in the afternoon.
When: July 24th
Homestay participants may join for the whole day, traveling on the school buses with the Japanese students. The buses will leave at 8:30am and be back at Ridley around 5:00pm. Alternatively, you may join the group in Mississauga from 1:30-3:00pm for the workshop, using your own transport.
Details: In the interactive 1.5 hour workshop, which is being conducted by a great organization called Let’s Talk Science, the students will extract and visualize DNA from themselves using household materials and equipment. The group will then be broken into teams to complete a forensic biotechnology challenge. The workshop is calibrated to a Grade 9 level, but will be fun for older teens as well (or even adults!).
Who can join: We have 20 workshop spots available for interested homestay family members, age 12 and older. Since our program teachers will be focused on the Japanese students, homestay children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children from multiple homestay families may attend with one designated homestay adult.
How much does it cost: There is no cost for attending the excursion (full day or the workshop only). Homestay participants will be responsible for purchasing their own lunch. Homestay families who use their own vehicles will not receive any mileage payment.
RSVP info: For Let’s Talk Science to have all the necessary supplies and materials ready for our group, we need to give them final numbers by June 30th. The deadline to apply for this opportunity is therefore June 29th. The opportunity is first-come, first-serve!
